Minneapolis-born digital artist jrdsctt is a MakersPlace OG and a staple of the community with over 250 unique collectors on MakersPlace. With his Genesis Drop, jrdsctt invites a new element into his creative process: artificial intelligence.

Heavily influenced by the music and lyrics of Nine Inch Nails and inspired by their former art director Rob Sheridan (1998–2014), jrdsctt uses glitch techniques such as pixelsorting and databending to explore unknown yet somehow familiar settings that occupy liminal spaces.

In these bright dystopias, viewers experience the dark side of technology and its impacts on the human psyche. The glitched-out textures toy with the human brain’s ability to make sense of abstract imagery. Is that a face? Are those just lines?

The work startles with the recognition that this sense-making capacity is the source of human gullibility in the face of human-like technology.

jrdsctt joined MakersPlace as an artist in early 2019. He later became their first official ambassador, helping run the MakersPlace Discord server alongside staff. This role eventually transitioned into an official job with the company in May of 2021.

He has been working there ever since, helping build the MakersPlace community during the day, and glitching dystopian worlds in the evening. The web3 space has consumed most of his waking hours (and some of his unconscious hours as well).

“ŧɇȼħ nøɨɍ” is inspired by a collaborative song by the band British Synthwave band GUNSHIP, filmmaker John Carpenter, and the songwriter Charlie Simpson. The song itself is titled “Tech Noir” and is a reference to the media genre of the same name, made famous by the novels of Philip K. Dick and films such as Blade Runner and The Terminator.

Bringing together science fiction and film noir, Tech Noir often explores themes of crime, mystery, futurism, and “technology as a destructive and dystopian force that threatens every aspect of our reality.”

The series specifically focuses on a monologue performed by Carpenter at the beginning of the song.

I'm recording this, because this could be the last thing I'll ever say
The city I once knew as home is
Teetering on the edge of radioactive oblivion
A three-hundred thousand-degree baptism by nuclear fire
I'm not sorry, we had it coming
A surge of white-hot atonement will be our wake-up call
Hope for our future is now a stillborn dream
The bombs begin to fall, and I'm rushing to meet my love
Please remember me
There is no more

The vibrant and brightly colored cyberpunk imagery is meant to capture the irony of humanity’s last moments and how beautiful yet tragic it will be. At the very peak of our technological advances and being able to accomplish things our ancestors could hardly even dream about, only to have everything ended by greed and our own feeble inability to protect our home planet from ourselves.

The use of A.I. imagery is also an intentional nod to the infamous “Skynet” supercomputer in The Terminator

This will be jrdsctt’s first time combining his classic glitch techniques with the sudden rise of A.I. prompt-generated imagery. It will be a great opportunity to collect work from jrdsctt that is both new and old at the same time. It will also be the first opportunity for previous collectors of jrdsctt’s MakersPlace work to be rewarded with a potential airdrop thank-you gift via his first Raffle.
