Artist Léo Caillard has made a career of toying with our relationship with time as a cultural artifact. Through a blend of anachronisms, he prompts viewers to reflect on the present as a revered historical moment and to reflect upon the past as a much more familiar place than it might seem.

Caillard furthers this open dialogue between historical periods in his latest series, “MetaStatues” four detailed 3D animations of Caillard’s original statues floating in space. Léo’s brother, Romain Caillard, provided a haunting score to accompany the drifting statues through space.

About Léo Caillard

Léo Caillard is part of the new generation of contemporary artists working on creation with a unique perspective. It is a plastic and meticulous approach that he offers us to observe. In between real marble sculptures and digital creations, he brings together different eras at the heart of the same work. This approach invites us to rediscover the past and the present with a new eye.

Although his work is mainly focused on marble sculpture, he continues to present some of his photo series. In particular the series “Hipsters in Stone”, started in 2012, where the current garment enters into dialogue with the ancient statuary. Tinged with a certain sense of humor, it raises real questions about our social habits.

Recently rising in the art world, he quickly participated in many international Art fairs and exhibitions. Whether he dresses the statues of the Louvre or revisits ancient sculpture, he always seeks the same effect: Surprise. To catch the spectator’s gaze, aroused curiosity by anachronistic associations. Far from effect for the sake of effect, reflection on the role of art and the representation of the world is present at all stages of his work.

MetaStatues

The creations in MetaStatues are reimaginings of iconic statues in relation to the modern world.

In “The Crypto Discobolus,” Caillard replaces the classical discus of “The Discobolus of Myron”  with a more modern show of strength: a giant Bitcoin. “The Future Poseidon” shows the mighty god of the sea in a protective face mask. “Thermae VR” investigates “The Boxer at Rest” (ca. ~330–50 BC) as a modern human at rest — which is to say, always entertained and titilated.

This release also sees the most modern take of Caillard’s career: the Statue of Bruce Lee in Hong Kong shows the great fighter in a VR headset, stripping from the scene any sense of danger that his striated muscles and ready fighting stance might have inspired.

In the museums of the distant future, these accessories will seem the quaint marks of an ancient civilization just like the discus, the leather straps around the forearms of “The Boxer at Rest,” or Poseidon’s triton.
