Legends Only: Los Angeles Vol I
“My music career brought me here 10 years ago, but I ended up starting my art journey, having a son, and in turn, truly began to live my purpose. L.A. has changed my life in every way possible! It’s mind-blowing to think one location has that type of power, but we all have a connection with this city. L.A. has birthed so many of the most iconic people & pop culture moments that connect us all. I wanted to create a special drop that celebrates just how much our city’s culture captivates the world. This series is a celebration of our community, but also the inherent power of pop culture, and how it connects people through shared moments of admiration, inspiration, and revelation.”
“Legends Only: Los Angeles” is a new collection of eight dynamic paintings by Los Angeles-based, museum-exhibited artist, Otha “Vakseen” Davis III. Known for celebrating pop culture through his vibrant portraits, Vakseen’s newest body of work celebrates L.A.’s cultural icons, as well as the importance and worldly impact of L.A. pop culture. Jeremiah Grin
It was “Hi How Are You” Day 2021, a day created to celebrate the late great Daniel Johnston, the Vincent Van Gogh of shoegazing pop music, when artist and longtime Daniel collaborator Ron English received a forgotten recording of a song he wrote with Daniel years ago, from producer Earl Norman, who had recorded it and rediscovered it on his computer.
The haunting song, titled “Big Empty Ego,” echoed the emptiness of the strange bubble of fame in which the tortured artist existed. The question was what to do with such an unusual musical treasure. By a series of fortunate turns of fate, the little recording will soon transform into a white-hot NFT, the ideal vehicle to encapsulate decades of collaboration between the two artists.
Through the vision of Ed Zipco of Superchief Gallery, a longtime fan of both Daniel Johnston and Ron English, this collection will be released as both an NFT drop on MakersPlace and in person gallery show in the Superchief Gallery in NYC.
