Hello! My name is Darrell Rocha and I wanted to briefly introduce myself as the new Head of Communications at MakersPlace — I’m very excited to be here, and am looking forward to the many adventures that await for this dynamic, passionate, and talented community.
By way of brief background: I spent the last 10+ years in communications at Sotheby’s auction house. It was an amazing experience, during which I had the privilege of discovering and sharing the stories behind many great works of art and pieces of history: from Edvard Munch’s The Scream to Georgia O’Keeffe’s personal recipe for chicken enchiladas, David Bowie’s private art collection, some of the earliest Nike Moon Shoes, restituted paintings that had been looted during World War II, the original handwritten rules to basketball, and beyond.
Like most people in the traditional art market, I watched the sale of Beeple’s Everydays: The First 5000 Days this spring (minted here at MakersPlace) with amazement. It was clear that this was the Big Bang of a new phenomenon — not an evolution of the traditional art market, but an entirely new paradigm that is centered on creators and built to support their work, both now and in perpetuity. And to be clear, it was a success that was only made possible through the ongoing support of a community that had been building for years prior to that moment.
I’m looking forward to finding new ways to share stories behind the many fantastic works and creators on our platform, as well as updates on the growth and evolution of the market for digital creativity.
See you in the metaverse,
Darrell
