Cody Seekins
“The thing about Cody Seekin’s art is that even if you don’t know what it is, you know it looks exactly as it is supposed to.”
Cody Seekins is a nomadic traditional fine artist turned digital creator whose artworks, both digital and physical, have been recognized by institutions and art lovers worldwide, including but not limited to Schön! Magazine, The Encylopedia of Infernal Delights, A capella Zoo, Juxtapoz, Hi-Fructose, and Beautiful Bizarre Magazines. Today Seekins is based in Thailand, but the world is his oyster.
As a military brat, Seekins lived and traveled all over the world, something he continues to do today. Every place Seekins has lived has affected his art and process in someway, with him noting Italy and Kansas as two places that stand out.
Looking back at his first artistic involvement, Seekins recalls playing with rocks and using them as pigment in Arizona. He continued to explore art as an independent outlet over the years. At age 19, Seekins had his first psychedelic experience which flipped his creation process on its head. Years later, Seekins further expanded his artistic horizons by completing an Master in Fine Arts in San Francisco. Now armed with a strong technical knowledge from a fine arts education and an exploratory approach in terms of his process and choice of subject matter, Seekins has quickly developed his own distinct style.
Seekins’ fantastical artwork takes a psychedelic approach to surrealism, resulting in subject matter that is completely foreign to the eye yet simultaneously familiar. It is equal parts disturbing and comforting. His style is centered around representation and is saturated by both psychological and traditional imagery. His style is undeniably inimitable and easily recognizable.
Cody Seekins spoke with our Community Manager, Aisha Arif, to discuss his inspiration, artistic and personal journey, and the evolution of his distinct style.
