Lawrence Lee

At a time in which CAD apps and fabulous rendering engines and VR reign, precision and infinite variability have taken charge and the essential humanity of art is in decline, I try to create works that appeal not only to one’s basic visual sensibilities through the elements of design that artists have been working out for hundreds of years and that form the visual lexicon of most Westerners, but I also try to include some degree of humanity — some degree of SOUL — that is so often missing in action in the cryptoart world.

— Lawrence Lee

Lawrence Lee is a professional artist who’s worked in both physical and digital mediums for over forty years. He is best known for his iconic shamanistic portraits which have remained a central subject matter within his work since 1975. Native American culture and mythology are common themes within Lee’s work.

Lee’s design esthetic is based on strong composition, visual balance, contrast, and the incorporation of lyrical elements when appropriate. Lee can be seen as a Michelangelo in the crypto-space: Utilizing basic digital tools to maintain a sense of soulful simplicity that continues to relay potent messages and feelings. His artistic process, which is both additive and subtractive, is reflective of a lifetime spent creating art with the influences of the outward world and inward mind coming together.

Since his debut solo-show in 1976, Lee has participated in three to four exhibitions each year. His artworks are held in private, public and corporate collections around the world. Since entering the CryptoArt space two years ago, Lee has quickly made a name for himself in the space with works held in the MOCA and collections of prestigious collectors. Lee has been invited to exhibit in the 2021 Florence Biennial and his work has recently been featured in the “Curatorial Volume 2: Leaders in Contemporary Art” resource book and “ArtFolio,” which will be published early next year.

Southwest Diary

My work at the easel as a painter specializing in acrylic shamanistic and landscape imagery has given me a half-century of experience. Digital tools allow me to employ techniques to achieve effects that are simply impossible to create with canvas, acrylic paints, and nylon brushes. This series of drops will for the first time be limited to a rather small set of themes: shamans, skulls, and kachinas, which I expect will become the foundation of all my future digital inventions.

— Lawrence Lee

This new series release features four digitally remastered renditions of Lee’s signature shamanic portraitures. What started as a celebration of shamanism within Native American cultures took a global turn as Lee discovered the importance of shamanism in cultures worldwide and began to incorporate designs and power-imbued artifacts from those cultures.
