The Collaboration
Katy Arrington is a digital painter based in Jakarta, Indonesia, whose works are inspired by the many forms of anime art from Kawaii, (Japanese cuteness culture) to the beautiful and strange. Her works can be described as everything from beautiful, strange, cute, creepy, joyous and twisted.
Vansdesign is an Italian designer and digital artist whose works blend many styles to generate colorful abstract artworks. Usually starting with simple shapes, he masterfully manipulates them into something abstract, 3D, or animated.
This first-ever collaboration between Katy Arrington and Vansdesign, features two unique styles of digital artistry, marrying Katy’s familiar Kawaii-inspired characters and unmistakeable illustrative style with Vansdesign’s mastery of abstract colors, shapes and animations creating something both ethereal and edgy.
The Forest
Inspiration and creativity can be hidden everywhere. In this collaboration Katy uses Vansdesign’s abstract color flowing texture as a way to incorporate mystical entities in the flowing patterns creating an entirely new world inside a simple texture.
“As soon as I saw Vans’ gorgeous digital textures, these ethereal calming fantastical images popped in my head. I wanted to give it a human touch. I love the contrast of the otherworldly abstract shapes that removes the concept of time and space with a grounded human figure. There is no story or identities to the figures, almost like they’re ghostly beings wandering the plane of this metaphysical realm Vans has created.” — Katy Arrington

VR Girl
This is VRGirl. Katy’s literal take of cyberpunk. She imagines living mainly in VR could be the new youth punk in the future. It’s their way of rejecting the limitations (physical and societal) of the real world, just like punk culture did in the 80s. They get to be whoever they want in their virtual world but just like drugs, sex, and rock and roll had their drawbacks, who knows yet what the negative side effects could be.
“The interface to the virtual connections in search of digital emotions. As the headset starts loading up it crashes while still being connected to its user forcing it to slowly boot up again and recover a stable state while the headset is still receiving emotional impulses eventually completing the reboot to just repeat the process all over again.” — Vansdesign
